The man with the earphones broke the ensuing silence.

“Hector says a bishop.”

“Ancient or modern?” said Mary.

“Modern of course.”

“I am a bishop,” said Mary, “who has hit the headlines by consecrating pubs and discotheques and holding communion services in them.”

“Why?” said Kelvin severely, “why do you do such things, your Grace?”

“Because Christ should belong to publicans and sinners and ordinary people everywhere.”

“That strikes me as a very condescending remark.”

“It was not meant to be!”

“Surely these efforts to court popularity by emphasizing the kindly, everyday aspect of the Christian message are destroying the foundation of it.”

“Surely not!”

“Surely yes! Christ’s deliberate rudeness to his mother, his vicious flagellation of the moneylenders, his murder of the barren fig-tree all indicate an authoritarian with a touch of sadism to him.”

“I disagree,” said Mary. “There may be some truth in what you say, but—”

“I am attempting to suggest to you,” said Kelvin, harshly talking her down, “that intelligent people will respect the church far more if it is less afraid of threatening, denouncing, dictating to, and generally terrorizing us.”

“Hector says that will do, Mary,” said the man with the earphones, “He says take him over to the staff club.”
